Nine Montgomery County high school standouts, including six from The Woodlands, earned their way onto the 2007 Texas Sports Writer's Association All-State Baseball Teams.
The area's lone first-team all-state selectee is New Caney High School's P.J. Dean, who was selected in the seventh round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Washington Nationals. He made the all-state team as a utility player and was drafted because of his ability as a pitcher. Dean was one of two county 4A players to make all-state - the other is Montgomery High School pitcher Bobby Stone, who made second-team by helping lead the Bears to the regional finals, pitching a no-hitter along the way.
Splendora's Ryland Parker, an outfielder, made the 3A honorable mention squad.
The Woodlands, which made it to the regional quarterfinals, has a pair of third-team all-state players in catcher Mickey Armstrong (.355) and outfielder Brett Eibner (.417, 6 HRs). Eibner was the fourth-round pick of the Houston Astros as a pitching prospect, while Armstrong is headed to Texas Tech on a baseball scholarship.
Also for the Highlanders, honorable mention all-state status was awarded to outfielder Taylor Grote (.325, 9 steals, team-high 36 runs scored), an eighth-round pick of the New York Yankees, and to third baseman Tim Schneider, pitcher Jerad Stevens and shortstop Ryan Mooney, all Sam Houston State University signees.
Schneider was named 15-5A's MVP, leading the Highlanders in batting (.422) and home runs (7), while Mooney hit .377 for the season (10 steals) and Stevens was 11-1 with a 1.50 ERA for the year (80 strikeouts, 22 walks).
All the Highlanders who made all-state were contributors on the 2006 The Woodlands High School team that won both the UIL 5A state title and the national championship.
